Embracing a New Era in Recycling
We are pleased to share a groundbreaking development in the world of polystyrene and sustainability: the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has officially recognised expanded polystyrene (EPS) transport packaging as a product that is recycled both in practice and at scale. This acknowledgment marks a significant milestone for our industry and offers a new outlook for a more sustainable future.
For a product to qualify as recycled in practice and at scale, it must have a 30% recycling rate in multiple regions with a population of at least 400 million. EPS satisfies this requirement with a recycling rate above 30% in North America, Europe, and parts of Asia.
For years, polystyrene has been a reliable choice for packaging due to its durability, versatility, and cost-effectiveness. However, its environmental impact has been a point of contention, many often assume that expanded polystyrene can’t be recycled. The UN’s recognition changes the narrative, affirming that polystyrene can be effectively recycled and reused in various applications, reducing its footprint on the planet.
